#9. Cherry, with a pau ferro fingerboard. This one sounds killer.
This is actually gourd banjo #8. Cherry, and morado with a maple Seeger inspired bridge and a stainless steel tone ring.
Here’s a shot of the tone ring before the head goes on. It takes approximately a dozen cut off wheels get to this point.
We are called this #8. Cherry neck, morado fingerboard and peghead overlay. I tried an experiment in stabilizing the gourd material, and it paid off, I think, in making things sound a bit brighter and strengthening the fruit. I’m on my way to

Gourd banjo 6 (I think). Of them all, I think this is my best yet in terms of construction and playability. I was kind of goofing around when I chose white limba for the neck. Turns out, it’s a super nice wood to work with easy, straight grain.
This little A scale makes me feel pretty proud. I saw the padauk that lives in the fretboard and peghead and couldn’t resist going back to it as a favorite type of wood. Moving forward, I vow to produce a lot less bright orange saw dust.
After a run of panicking over gluing tackheads, this evening was a breezy walk in the park.
